Matthew Francis Kane, age 50, affectionately known by his friends and loved ones as "Pickles," passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 9, 2026, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Born on May 5, 1975, in Cape May Court House, Cape May, New Jersey, Matt experienced the touch of sand beneath his feet for the first time at just four weeks old.

From that point on Matt was drawn to shores of Cape May. Swimming in the ocean was not only a beloved pastime but a source of solace and joy throughout his life. The scent of the bay air carried him back to his childhood, filling him with warmth and happiness every time he approached the shore landscape.

After high school Matt went to Walnut Hill College for culinary studies. Here he further developed his passion for cooking and preparing meals for his family and friends. He would eventually pursue a future in the Philadelphia Building Trades, seeing it as the best way to support his family. Joining the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental & Reinforcing Ironworkers Local Union #401 would eventually become something much greater than a way to provide for his family, but an eternal bond with the membership of #401 lasting a lifetime.

Matt leaves behind a legacy of heartfelt connections and the lasting impact of a life well-lived; his loss will be felt by many for years to come. Whenever you are driving to a shore point, draw in a breath of salty ocean air and take a moment to remember Pickles.

Matt was predeceased by his father Stephen P. Kane and sister Katie Gaffney. He is survived by his two children Garrett and Delaney Kane, mother Mary Ellen Kane (Gaffney), and grandmother Patricia Kane (Bingham). Matt also leaves behind his siblings Stephen J. Kane (Kimberly), Megan P. Kane, and Colleen M. Kane, and his lifelong friend and beloved fiancé Amy Henderson. Pickles will be dearly missed by his extended family, many friends, nieces, nephews, and all his brothers and sisters at the Ironworkers Local #401.

A visitation for Matt “Pickles” Kane, will be held at St. Matthew Church, 3000 Cottman Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19149 on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 from 6-8pm and again on Thursday, April 23, 2026 from 9:15-10:30am. A mass of Christian Burial will follow his visitation starting at 11am. The family has requested to please omit flowers and kindly consider donations in Matt’s name to The Rock Ministries or by supporting a fund dedicated to Garrett and Delaney’s higher education.
